Electric car rental in Almaty: prices, models and routes from Rent-Trip
Electric cars in Almaty are no longer a rarity — they are rented for mountain trips, business trips and daily business meetings. Let's break down how much rental costs, which models are available right now and where you can actually go with them.
How much does it cost to rent an electric car: prices for all models
Rental prices vary depending on class, range and equipment. Rent-Trip offers 8 models — from city cars to premium ones, and each has its own economics.
Electric car rental cost per day: from budget to premium
At Rent-Trip, rental starts from 16,500 KZT/day for Hyundai Ioniq 5 (Comfort) and reaches 61,000 KZT/day for BMW M5 (Unique). The price difference is due not only to class but also to range: Hyundai Ioniq 5 covers up to 400 km, while BMW M5 — up to 500 km on a single charge. At the same time, the cost of a full charge for both models is comparable — about 2,500–3,000 KZT, which makes the premium segment profitable for long trips. In my opinion, the Ioniq 5 is optimal for the city — its 400 km is enough for 3–4 days without recharging, and for status meetings, Lexus ES or Zeekr 007 look more solid in the business district.

What is cheaper: renting an electric car or a petrol car
Renting an electric car is 20–30% cheaper than a petrol analogue due to charging cost: a full charge of Hyundai Ioniq 5 costs about 2,500 KZT, while petrol for 400 km — from 8,000 KZT. Also note that electric cars do not require oil changes and timing belt replacement — these costs are already included in the rental price. When renting for a week, fuel savings reach 15,000–20,000 KZT, and on service — up to 5,000 KZT.
Which electric cars can you rent: Rent-Trip model range
We'll tell you which models are available for rent right now. Rent-Trip has 8 options for every taste and budget.
Electric cars for the city: Hyundai Ioniq 5 and Hongqi H5
For city trips we recommend Hyundai Ioniq 5 (16,500 ₸/day) — compact, maneuverable, with a range of 400 km, enough for 3–4 days of city driving. Hongqi H5 (25,000 ₸/day) — an excellent choice for business meetings: spacious interior, executive look, range of 450 km. Both models are easy to park downtown, where some streets have Sergek cameras — electric cars are not subject to emission restrictions.
Premium and unique models: Volvo XC90 and BMW M5
Volvo XC90 (57,000 ₸/day) — a premium SUV for mountain trips: all-wheel drive, range of 500 km, leather interior and panoramic roof. BMW M5 (61,000 ₸/day) — for those who want thrills: 600 hp, 0–100 km/h in 3.4 seconds, but note — energy consumption is higher, range will be 400–450 km with active driving. In October we had a case: a client took the BMW M5 for the weekend, drove to Charyn Canyon and back with one charge at the CCS station in Shelek-Center.
Minivans and business class: Lexus TX, Hyundai Ioniq 9, Zeekr 007, Lexus ES
For a family or group of 5–7 people we have Lexus TX (42,000 ₸/day) and Hyundai Ioniq 9 (38,000 ₸/day) — both with a range of up to 450 km and spacious interior. Zeekr 007 (29,000 ₸/day) — a 2025 newcomer with a range of 480 km and Level 2 autopilot, ideal for long trips. Lexus ES (28,000 ₸/day) — a classic business sedan with a quiet ride. In our experience, Zeekr 007 is most often taken for trips to Kyrgyzstan — 240 km to Bishkek, enough charge to go there and back without recharging.
Where to charge an electric car: infrastructure and tips
Let's break down where to charge an electric car, how much it costs, and how to do it properly. The city's infrastructure allows you to drive without problems.
Charging stations: map and connector types
There are over 50 charging stations in the city — mostly Type 2 (slow charging) and CCS/CHAdeMO (fast). Most are located at shopping malls (Mega, Esentai Mall), gas stations, and downtown. For fast charging (up to 80% in 30–40 minutes), look for CCS stations — they are at Mega Alma-Ata mall and Helios gas stations. Slow Type 2 charges in 4–6 hours, convenient overnight. In our orders of 3 days or more, we provide a map with marked stations — this saves time on the first rental day.
How much does it cost to charge an electric car
A full charge costs from 1,500 to 3,500 ₸ depending on battery capacity and station tariff — this is 3–4 times cheaper than filling a gasoline equivalent. At fast stations, the tariff is higher (25–35 ₸/kWh), but charging time is 6–8 times less. It's cheaper to charge at night on slow stations — tariffs are 20–30% lower. If you're planning a weekend trip, charge the car on Type 2 in the evening before departure — by morning the battery will be full, and the charging cost will be about 1,500 ₸ instead of 2,500 ₸ at a fast station.
How to charge an electric car properly: tips for beginners
- Check the connector: our models only have CCS and Type 2 — make sure the station supports your type. CHAdeMO is not suitable for Hyundai Ioniq 5 and Zeekr 007.
- Avoid full discharge: it's optimal to charge at 20–30% remaining — this extends battery life. Full discharge to 0% reduces lifespan by 5–10%.
- Use apps: ElectroCars KZ and 2GIS show station occupancy in real time — during peak hours (6–8 PM) at Mega there may be a queue of 2–3 cars.
- Plan with a margin in winter: at −10°C, range drops by 20–30% due to cabin heating. If going to the mountains, charge to 80% before departure — on the way back, regeneration will partially restore the charge.
- Do not leave the car charging beyond 100%: modern BMS cuts off power, but constant 100% charge accelerates battery degradation.
Electric car rental terms: license, deposit, contract and insurance
Before renting an electric car, it's important to understand the documents and financial terms. At Rent-Trip the process is standard, but there are nuances related to electric cars.
What license is needed to rent an electric car
A standard driver's license category B is sufficient — no additional permits required. Renter age — from 23 years, driving experience — from 3 years. Exception: for BMW M5 we require experience from 5 years due to high power (600 hp) — this is standard practice for premium models. If you are a citizen of another country, an international license or a national license with a notarized translation into Kazakh or Russian is acceptable.
Deposit and payment methods: Kaspi, Halyk, cash
- Deposit: from 50,000 ₸ for Hyundai Ioniq 5 to 150,000 ₸ for BMW M5. Fully refunded upon returning the car without damage within 1–3 business days.
- Kaspi Gold / Halyk: deposit is credited instantly, refund to card on the day of return. When paying via Kaspi, commission is 0%.
- Cash: we accept tenge, deposit is paid in cash against a receipt — refund on the spot after inspection.
- Bank transfer: for legal entities — invoice and contract, payment within 3 days.
Rental agreement and insurance: what's included
We enter into a rental agreement on standard terms: duration, mileage (unlimited for all models), liability for damage. The price includes compulsory third-party liability insurance (OSGPO) — covers damage to third parties up to 500,000 ₸. For complete peace of mind, we offer CASCO (3,000–5,000 ₸/day) — covers scratches, chips, punctured tires, and at-fault accidents. In our practice, 80% of clients choose CASCO — a broken headlight on a Zeekr 007 costs 180,000 ₸, while daily insurance costs 3,500 ₸.
Where to go in a rented electric car: routes from Almaty
An electric car is not just a city toy; you can actually drive it to the mountains, canyons, and even to a neighboring country. We'll tell you about proven routes considering the charging infrastructure.
Medeu and Shymbulak: 30 minutes from the city
To Medeu (15 km from the center) and Shymbulak (20 km) — an ideal route for an electric car. The uphill climb consumes energy, but on the way back, regenerative braking recovers 10–15% of the charge. A Hyundai Ioniq 5 reaches Shymbulak with 80% charge and returns with 65% — without recharging. At the skating rink parking lot, there is a Type 2 station — you can recharge during your walk. We recommend taking a Volvo XC90 or Lexus TX for a comfortable family trip — all-wheel drive and a spacious interior make the serpentine climb comfortable.
Charyn Canyon: 200 km, one recharge
Charyn Canyon (200 km, 3 hours drive) is a great option for a day trip. A full charge (400–500 km) is enough for the round trip with 50–100 km to spare. The only charging station along the way is CCS in Shelek Center (100 km). A Lexus ES with a range of 500 km reaches the canyon and back without refueling. If you plan to stay overnight, charge in Shelek before heading back — a fast station fills the battery in 40 minutes.
Lake Kolsai and Kyrgyzstan: long-distance routes
To Lake Kolsai (300 km) — 4–5 hours. This route requires one recharge: there is a CCS station in Kegen district (200 km), but only one. A Zeekr 007 with a range of 480 km reaches Kolsai with 80% charge and returns with 10% — strictly with a recharge in Kegen. For a trip to Kyrgyzstan (Bishkek — 240 km), a full charge of an Ioniq 9 or Lexus TX is enough — enough for the round trip. In Bishkek, there are more CCS stations than in Almaty — you can recharge in the city center.
BAO and Turgen Gorge: 80–100 km
Big Almaty Lake (BAO, 80 km) and Turgen Gorge (100 km) are popular weekend routes. For BAO, any electric car is suitable — range is not critical, regenerative braking on the descent recovers up to 15% charge. There is a Type 2 at the BAO parking lot, but it is often occupied — better to arrive with 60%+ charge. Turgen Gorge has a dirt road for the last 5 km; a Volvo XC90 with all-wheel drive handles it without issues, while a Hyundai Ioniq 5 only in dry weather.
Conclusion
An electric car is profitable and practical: fuel savings up to 30%, access to fast charging stations, and the ability to go to the mountains, canyons, and even Kyrgyzstan. The main thing is to choose the model for the task: for the city, Comfort is enough, for business trips — Business, for experiences — Premium or Unique. Consider the range, location of charging stations, and seasonal features — in winter, plan 20–30% more time for charging. Following these rules, renting becomes more convenient and cheaper than a gasoline counterpart.
