Discounts on long-term rentals
When renting for a week at Rent-Trip, a 10% discount applies, for a month — up to 20% off the standard price. For a week, a Kia Carnival will cost not 26,000 ₸/day but 23,400 ₸, for a month — about 20,800 ₸/day. For the Hyundai Staria, the difference is even more noticeable: with a monthly booking, you pay 25,600 ₸/day instead of 32,000 ₸. In practice, long-term rental is more profitable than 3-4 one-time trips — savings reach 15,000 ₸ with a monthly booking of a Kia Carnival.
What's included in the rental price
The base rental cost at Rent-Trip includes a daily mileage of up to 200 km, insurance and basic equipment. For exceeding the limit — 10-15 ₸/km, which should be considered when planning a trip to Charyn Canyon (about 400 km round trip). In our experience, clients often rent a Nissan Elgrand for a trip to Kolsai — the round trip is 600 km, and the surcharge for the extra 400 km is 4,000-6,000 ₸. It's better to book with extended mileage right away than to pay extra on the spot.
Documents and terms for minivan rental: what you need to know
To rent a minivan, you need a minimal set of documents. Let's break down Rent-Trip's terms: deposit, insurance, rental without a driver.
What documents are needed to rent a minivan
To rent from Rent-Trip, you need an ID card and a driver's license of category B (experience of at least 2 years). Foreign guests can use a foreign passport with a notarized translation of their license. If you plan to travel to Kyrgyzstan, you will additionally need a foreign passport and a written route confirmation — we arrange it within 1 day. In October, we had a case: tourists from Europe rented a Volkswagen Multivan for a week with a trip to Issyk-Kul, we prepared all the paperwork within a day.
Rental deposit: amount and refund terms
The rental deposit at Rent-Trip ranges from 50,000 to 100,000 ₸ depending on the model and is returned on the day of car return. For a Honda Stepwgn, the deposit is 50,000 ₸, for a Toyota Alphard or Hyundai Ioniq 9 — 100,000 ₸. The deposit can be paid in cash or blocked on a Kaspi/Halyk card — unblocking takes up to 24 hours after returning the minivan. In practice, unblocking on Kaspi is faster, on average 2-3 hours, and on Halyk — by the end of the business day.
Rental without a driver: terms and restrictions
At Rent-Trip, rental without a driver is a standard service available to all customers with a category B license and at least 2 years of experience. There are no additional fees for 'self-driving' — you only pay the rental cost and deposit. If you have less than 2 years of experience or no license, we can provide a minivan with a driver for an additional fee of 5,000 ₸ per shift. For corporate clients with a driver, the rate is 7,000 ₸ per 8-hour working day — a popular option for meeting delegations at Almaty airport.
Which minivan to choose for a trip to the mountains and nature
Almaty is a city at the foot of the mountains. We'll tell you which minivan is best for Medeu, Shymbulak, Charyn Canyon, and long-distance trips.
Best minivan for a trip to Medeu and Shymbulak
For a trip to Medeu and Shymbulak, we recommend the Hyundai Staria or Kia Carnival — they have good ground clearance (170-180 mm) and a powerful engine for serpentine roads. The Staria with a 2.2-liter diesel (177 hp) confidently climbs uphill even fully loaded — 8 people plus skis in the trunk. In winter on icy sections of the road to Shymbulak, all-wheel drive is not necessary — front-wheel drive models with winter tires handle excellently, but we advise taking a Nissan Elgrand with a stability control system. In our experience, the Elgrand proved more reliable than others on icy serpentines above Medeu — the stabilization system engages precisely without delay.
Minivan for a trip to Charyn Canyon and Kolsai
For a trip to Charyn Canyon (200 km) and Lake Kolsai (300 km), the Volkswagen Multivan is ideal — the diesel engine consumes 7-8 L/100 km, and the spacious cabin is comfortable for 7 passengers on a 4-hour journey. On the Almaty-Charyn highway, the Multivan covers 200 km on one tank with reserve, while the Nissan Elgrand with a gasoline V6 (3.5 L) burns 12-13 L over the same distance. On gravel approaches to Kolsai, the Multivan's ground clearance (190 mm) saves from bottoming out — unlike low Honda Stepwgns, which are better left for the city. For Charyn, we recommend taking a car with a fuel reserve: the last gas station before the canyon is in the village of Shelek, then 40 km of gravel road without gas stations.
Electric minivans for the city: Hyundai Ioniq 9 and Kia EV9
The Hyundai Ioniq 9 and Kia EV9 are electric minivans in the Rent-Trip fleet with a range of up to 400 km, covering daily city routes without recharging. Charging from a fast station (100 kW) takes 30 minutes to 80% — such stations are located at the exits from Almaty (Tole bi St., Al-Farabi Ave.). For a trip to Medeu, the charge is enough for a round trip with 40% reserve, but to Shymbulak in winter, consumption rises to 28 kWh/100 km due to the climb and cabin heating. In our measurements, the Ioniq 9 consumes 10% less energy than the EV9 due to better aerodynamics — the difference is especially noticeable at highway speeds of 90-110 km/h.
Capacity, fuel consumption and equipment of minivans
When choosing a minivan, look at the number of seats, trunk space, and engine appetite. Let's compare the key characteristics of all 8 Rent-Trip models.
Comparison of capacity and cabin configuration
| Model | Seats | Configuration | Trunk (L) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Honda Stepwgn | 7 | 2-2-3 | 450 |

| Volkswagen Multivan | 7 | 2-3-2 | 972 |
| Hyundai Staria | 8 | 2-3-3 | 910 |
| Toyota Alphard | 7 | 2-2-3 | 940 |
| Hyundai Ioniq 9 | 7 | 2-3-2 | 620 |
| Kia EV9 | 7 | 2-3-2 | 575 |
Fuel consumption: gasoline, diesel, and electric
| Model | Type | Fuel consumption (L/100 km) | Range (km) |

Additional options: child seats, insurance and out-of-town trips
You can add options to the base rental — from a child seat to extended insurance. Here’s what we offer and how much it costs.
Child seats and boosters
At Rent-Trip you can rent a child car seat (500 ₸/day) or a booster (300 ₸/day) for children from 9 months to 12 years. Seats are group 1/2/3 (9-36 kg), certified to ECE R44/04 standard. In practice, most often one seat is ordered for a Kia Carnival or Hyundai Staria — these models have Isofix anchors on two rear rows. If you’re traveling with two children, we recommend booking seats in advance: the fleet has 6 seats, and in high season (May-September) they are booked up in 2-3 days.
Extended insurance and CASCO
Basic insurance is included in the rental price and covers damage up to 200,000 ₸ with a deductible of 50,000 ₸. Extended insurance (1,500 ₸/day) reduces the deductible to 0 ₸ and covers the full cost of the car in case of theft or total damage. For Toyota Alphard and Hyundai Ioniq 9 we recommend extended insurance — body repair costs for these models start from 300,000 ₸. In our conditions, Sergek cameras record every accident, so with extended insurance you don’t waste time on paperwork — just call us, we pick up the car.
Out-of-town trips and trips to Kyrgyzstan
The standard rental agreement allows travel outside Almaty within a radius of 300 km — this is enough to reach Charyn Canyon, Kolsai, and BAE. For trips to Kyrgyzstan (Issyk-Kul, Bishkek) written approval is required and an additional 2,000 ₸ for processing transit documents. The contract specifies the travel period — usually up to 7 days. We’ve had tourists call who wanted to extend their trip to Issyk-Kul for another 3 days — we reissued the contract remotely via WhatsApp. The main thing is to notify us a day before the end of the term.
Where to rent a minivan in Almaty: direct rental vs aggregators
In Almaty, you can rent a minivan directly from a rental company or through an aggregator. Let’s break down the pros and cons of each option.
Direct rental: own fleet and fixed prices
Direct rental is a company that owns the cars and rents them out itself. At Rent-Trip, the entire fleet of 8 minivans is ours — we don’t take cars from private owners. This gives fixed prices without the aggregator’s markup (usually 15-25%), the ability to inspect a specific car before booking, and personal contact with a manager. In our experience, 80% of clients come to the parking lot (Timiryazeva St., 25) before booking — they check the interior condition, test the air conditioning, get behind the wheel. If they don’t like the car, they choose another from available stock without penalty.
Aggregators: wide selection, but hidden fees
Aggregators (e.g., Kasgi Car or local online platforms) gather offers from different owners — from private individuals to small rental agencies. The plus side is more models: you can find rare options like the Mercedes V-Class. The downsides are a 15-25% higher price due to the platform's commission, no guarantee the car is in the stated condition, and difficulties with deposit refunds. According to customer reviews, through aggregators deposits are returned in 3-5 days, whereas with us it's on the day of return. If predictability matters, direct rental is more reliable.
When to choose direct rental and when an aggregator
- Direct rental: if you need a specific model from the list (Honda Stepwgn, Kia Carnival), are planning a long trip (a week or more), or value a fixed price without surprises
- Aggregator: if you're looking for a rare model (Mercedes V-Class, Toyota Granvia) or want to compare prices from 5-10 owners in one evening
- Our advice: for standard routes (airport — city — Medeu — Charyn) go with direct rental — it will be cheaper and faster in terms of paperwork (15 minutes vs 40-60 on an aggregator)
Conclusion
Renting a minivan is a practical solution for a family, group of friends, or business trip. From the budget Honda Stepwgn (24,000 ₸/day) to the premium Hyundai Ioniq 9 (38,000 ₸/day) — everyone can find a car for their route and budget. The main thing is to decide on your tasks in advance: for the city and short trips, electric minivans or the Stepwgn will do; for mountains and canyons, the Multivan or Staria; for business meetings, the Alphard. Don't forget about the deposit (from 50,000 ₸), mileage (200 km/day base), and additional options like a child seat or extended insurance. Plan your trip, choose a model for your scenario — and the road will be comfortable.
