Car Rental in Almaty: Full Terms, Documents, and FAQs
I, Askhat Nurlanov, head of the rental department at Rent-Trip, will tell you everything about rental terms: documents, deposit, insurance, and frequently asked questions. No fluff — only what you really need to know.
What documents are needed to rent a car
Let's break down which documents are mandatory and which are optional. We'll cover situations with old-style licenses and for foreign guests.
Mandatory Package: ID and Driver's License
To rent from Rent-Trip, you only need two documents: an ID (citizen ID of the Republic of Kazakhstan or residence permit) and a category B driver's license. We don't require any income certificates, guarantors, or additional paperwork — this is standard practice for direct rental, unlike aggregators that may ask for an IIN or bank statement. Our clients are often surprised that the process takes 5-7 minutes: we scan documents, sign the contract, and hand over the keys. It's important that the license is valid for at least 3 months from the rental end date — this is a standard insurance company requirement.
Old-Style License: Can You Rent a Car?
Yes, old-style licenses (paper or plastic without a barcode) are valid for rental in Kazakhstan if they are not expired. At Rent-Trip, we accept such licenses without issue — as long as the surname and photo match the ID. According to our statistics, about one in five clients arrives with an old-style license, and there have been no rejections. However, when traveling to Kyrgyzstan, we recommend exchanging them for a new-style one in advance — there may be questions at the border.
Rental for Foreigners: What Documents Are Needed?
Foreigners can rent a car at Rent-Trip with a foreign passport with a visa (if required) and a national driver's license in Latin script or an International Driving Permit (IDP). Guests from CIS countries (Russia, Uzbekistan, Kyrgyzstan) can rent with their national licenses — no international permit is required, as Kazakhstan recognizes these countries' documents. If your license is in Arabic, Cyrillic, or hieroglyphics, we recommend obtaining an International Driving Permit before your trip — this will save time when signing the contract.
Age and Driving Experience: Restrictions and Exceptions
Age and experience are key parameters that affect rental eligibility. Let's go over the standard requirements and possible exceptions.
Minimum Age for Rental
At Rent-Trip, the minimum age for renting a car is 21. For premium-class cars (if available), the age threshold may be raised to 23-25 — this is global practice related to accident statistics among young drivers. We had a case: a 20-year-old student wanted to rent a Hyundai Accent for a week to travel to Kolsai. We accommodated him — we requested an increased deposit (50,000 KZT) and asked for proof of experience (he had been driving since 18). If you are between 19 and 21, we can consider rental on a case-by-case basis — provided you have at least 2 years of experience and a positive credit history.
Driving Experience: How Much Do You Need to Rent a Car?
The minimum driving experience for renting at Rent-Trip is 2 years from the date of obtaining your driver's license. This is not our whim — it's stipulated in the insurance contract: drivers with less than 2 years of experience are considered high-risk, and insurance is more expensive for them. If your experience is less, we can offer rental with an increased deposit (from 50,000 KZT) or with the 'Sober Driver' service for the first few days — this is more cost-effective than paying a higher insurance premium.
Deposit, Security, and Payment Methods
A deposit is standard practice in car rental. We'll tell you how much you need to pay, how to get it back, and whether you can rent without a deposit.
What Deposit Is Required for Rental?
At Rent-Trip, the deposit ranges from 30,000 to 50,000 KZT depending on the car model. For Hyundai Accent and Chevrolet Spark — 30,000 KZT, for Kia Rio and Skoda Rapid — 40,000 KZT, for Toyota Yaris — 50,000 KZT. The deposit is blocked on your card (Kaspi or Halyk) and returned within 1-3 business days after returning the car without damage or fines. In practice, 90% of clients get their full deposit back — we don't look for reasons to withhold it if the car is returned in the same condition. The only exception: 'Sergek' fines come with a delay of up to 2 weeks, so we hold the deposit until all camera fines are settled.
Rent without a deposit: is it real?
Yes, at Rent-Trip you can rent a car without a deposit for regular customers who have rented at least 3 times and had no violations. We record rental history in our CRM — if a client returned the car on time, without damage or fines, on the fourth time we don't take a deposit. For new clients without a deposit, we offer the 'Standard' option with an increased daily rate (+1,000 ₸/day) — convenient if you don't want to freeze a large amount.
Payment methods: Kaspi, Halyk, cash
- Kaspi Gold: deposit is returned instantly after car inspection — the fastest way.
- Halyk Bank: standard transfer, refund within 1-2 business days.
- Visa/Mastercard: we accept cards from any bank, no commission charged.
- Cash in tenge: we accept, but the deposit in this case is in cash against a receipt.
- Non-cash payment for legal entities: with provision of an invoice and closing documents.
Insurance and What to Do in Emergencies
Insurance is a mandatory element of rental. Let's break down what is covered, how to act in an accident, and who pays fines from 'Sergek' cameras.
What is included in basic insurance
At Rent-Trip, each rental includes basic insurance — it covers damage from accidents with a liability limit of up to 500,000 ₸. If the damage amount exceeds this threshold, the difference is covered by the renter. The basic package includes:
- Civil liability towards third parties — if you damaged someone else's car.
- Accident damage — repair of the rented car with a deductible of 50,000 ₸.
- Theft — if the car is stolen, the renter pays 20% of the market value as assessed.
- Glass and mirrors — not included in basic insurance, covered separately.
How to act in an accident with a rented car
If you have an accident — don't panic and follow the algorithm. First: turn on hazard lights, set up a warning triangle, call the police at 102. Second: take photos of the scene from all angles, record the other party's details (full name, car plate, insurance policy). Third: call Rent-Trip at the number from the contract — we'll advise where to tow the car (our partners are 'Avtopomoshch Almaty' tow trucks). Fourth: do not sign any papers without consulting us — sometimes drivers admit fault under pressure when they could have disputed it. Important: if the damage is minor (scratch, chip), you can fill out a European accident report without calling the police — it's faster and doesn't affect your rental history.
Fines from 'Sergek' cameras: who pays?
Fines from 'Sergek' cameras come to the car owner — that is, Rent-Trip. We forward the receipt to the renter via WhatsApp or Telegram within 24 hours of receipt. Payment must be made within 20 days — then a 50% discount applies. If the fine is not paid, we deduct the amount from the deposit. The most common violations among our clients: speeding on Abay Avenue (cameras there every 500 meters), running a red light at the Saina — Tole Bi intersection, and parking in unauthorized places in the city center.
What to do if the car breaks down on the road
If the car breaks down during the rental — call us. Rent-Trip has a 24/7 support line, we send a tow truck or call a mobile mechanic. A mechanic's visit within the city is free, within Almaty. If the breakdown is our fault (manufacturing defect, part wear), we provide a replacement car within 2-4 hours. If it's the renter's fault (wrong fuel, damaged suspension off-road) — repairs at the client's expense. Tip: before leaving the city, check the oil and coolant levels — we show where everything is when handing over the car.
Rental Prices: From Economy to Premium
Let's look at current rental prices in our fleet — from budget models to cars for long trips. The cost depends on class, season, and rental duration.
Table: models, prices and rental terms
Discounts and special offers
- Rental from 7 days: 10% discount on the daily rate.
- Rental from 14 days: 15% discount + free car delivery to Almaty airport.
- Repeat customers: 5% discount on each subsequent rental.
- Seasonal promotions: Summer (June-August) — 10% discount on Hyundai Accent for rentals from 3 days.
What affects the final cost
The final price consists of several factors. First — season: in summer and during New Year holidays demand is higher, prices may rise by 15-20%. Second — rental period: the longer, the cheaper per day. Third — additional services: child seat (1,000 ₸/day), navigator (500 ₸/day), car delivery (2,000 ₸ within the city). Fourth — car class: economy is cheaper, but if you plan a trip to Charyn Canyon, it's better to take a Kia Rio — it has higher ground clearance and is not afraid of dirt roads.
Can You Drive Out of Town and to Kyrgyzstan?
A rented car means freedom of movement. We'll tell you where you can go without restrictions, and where only with permission.
Trips across Kazakhstan: no restrictions
With an Rent-Trip car you can travel outside the city without additional approvals. We do not limit mileage — you can go to Charyn Canyon (200 km), Kolsai Lakes (300 km), Turkestan (800 km) or Astana (1,200 km). The only condition: notify us of your route when signing the contract — this is needed for insurance. In practice, 30% of our clients rent cars specifically for intercity trips, and no problems arise.
Travel to Kyrgyzstan: what you need to know
Travel to Kyrgyzstan in a rented car is possible but requires prior approval. At Rent-Trip we allow travel to Kyrgyzstan under the following conditions: rental from 5 days, deposit increased to 70,000 ₸, an additional agreement is signed. At the border you need: rental agreement, vehicle registration certificate (we provide a copy), power of attorney for driving (issued free of charge). Important: Kyrgyz 'Green Card' insurance is not included in the basic policy — you need to buy it at the border (about 3,000 ₸ for 15 days). Without it, entry is prohibited.
Where you cannot go with a rented car
Travel to war zones and areas without paved roads is prohibited. Specifically: you cannot travel to Tajikistan, Uzbekistan and China — this requires special permits and international insurance. Also, you cannot use the car off-road in the mountains (e.g., Asy Plateau) — it is not an SUV, and we do not insure undercarriage damage from stones.
Conclusion
Car rental is a simple process if you know the terms in advance. Gather two documents (ID and driver's license), check your driving experience (at least 2 years) and age (at least 21), choose a model for your needs — and you're ready to go. The deposit from 30,000 ₸ is returned after returning the car, insurance covers major risks, and traveling outside the city does not require additional permits. If you plan a trip to Kyrgyzstan — arrange it in advance and buy a 'Green Card' at the border. Have a pleasant journey on Almaty roads — from Medeu to Charyn Canyon.
