GAZ rental in Almaty: 3 models for any task — from a retro wedding to cargo transportation
Rent-Trip offers three GAZ models: from a retro sedan to a truck. We tell you how to choose the right one for your task and share the nuances of driving in the city and the mountains.
Which GAZ model to choose for your task
The three GAZ models at Rent-Trip cover three different tasks: a retro sedan for events, a minibus for passengers and light cargo, and a truck for transportation. Let's break down what to choose for a specific scenario.
GAZ-21 Volga Retro — retro sedan for events
The GAZ-21 Volga Retro at Rent-Trip is a 1960s retro sedan with a manual transmission, rented from 50,000 KZT/day and classified as 'Unique'. The 'Sedan' body and classic lines make it the star of any photo shoot: from the Green Bazaar to the Medeu cable car. On the road, the car behaves predictably but requires care on serpentines — the ground clearance and brakes are designed for an era when speeds were lower. In our practice, such a car is taken not for racing but for the atmosphere. A retro car is not about speed but about atmosphere: at a wedding or a shoot, it works as an art object, so it's important to book it 2-3 weeks before the date.
GAZ Gazelle Next — versatile minibus
The GAZ Gazelle Next is a minibus of the 'Minivans' class from 18,000 KZT/day, which seats up to 13 passengers and is suitable for trips to the mountains, moving furniture, and light cargo. The 'Minibus' body with a manual transmission is a workhorse: we rent it out both for a family trip to Shymbulak and for a move with movers. The cabin is spacious, and the trunk is separated from the passenger compartment, which is convenient for building materials or large household appliances. Fuel consumption in the city cycle is reasonable for a commercial class, and the suspension handles both our potholes and speed bumps. The Gazelle Next is the most versatile model in the fleet: it's equally good for a family trip to Shymbulak and for transporting building materials, making it the most in-demand option.
GAZ Valdai Truck — truck for transportation
The GAZ Valdai Truck is a truck of the 'SUVs' class from 25,000 KZT/day, designed for cargo transportation: building materials, large furniture, commercial batches of goods. The 'Truck' body with a rigid leaf spring suspension takes what the Gazelle can't handle — from pallets of cement to refrigeration equipment. The Valdai is in demand at sites in Boraldai and new residential complexes on the outskirts, where regular trucks can't go due to their size. The manual transmission here is a plus: the driver controls the traction on the climb to BAO or on the pass. If the cargo volume is more than 1.5 tons, take the Valdai rather than the Gazelle: it has higher load capacity and a stiffer suspension designed for constant loading.
Comparison of GAZ models at Rent-Trip
All three GAZ models at Rent-Trip have manual transmissions, a deposit from 50,000 to 200,000 KZT depending on the class, and daily payment; they differ in price, body type, and usage scenario. The deposit is returned within 1-3 business days after returning the car without damage or fines.
| Model | Class | Body | Price | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| GAZ-21 Volga Retro | Unique | Sedan | from 50,000 KZT/day | Weddings, shoots, photo sessions |
| GAZ Gazelle Next | Minivans | Minibus | from 18,000 KZT/day | Passengers, mountains, light cargo |
| GAZ Valdai Truck | SUVs | Truck | from 25,000 KZT/day | Freight, construction, commercial use |
GAZ rental terms: deposit from 50,000 KZT, with a category B license
Rent-Trip — car rental with clear terms: the deposit depends on the car class and is returned after returning the car. Let's break down the details.
GAZ rental: deposit and terms
Rent-Trip rents out all GAZ models with a deposit, the amount of which depends on the car class: for economy and comfort — 50,000 KZT, for business, SUVs and minivans — 100,000 KZT, for premium — 150,000 KZT, for unique models — 200,000 KZT. The deposit is returned within 1–3 business days after returning the car without damage or fines. It's convenient: you only pay for the rental period, and the deposit is a guarantee of the car's safety. When booking via WhatsApp, we record the model, dates and cost, and upon delivery, the car's condition is documented in an acceptance report. The rate includes up to 200 km per day; beyond the limit, there's an extra charge per kilometer, the amount of which is specified in the contract.
Documents and license: what you need to rent
To rent any GAZ model at Rent-Trip, all you need is an ID and a category B driver's license — all three models fall under this category. No special permits for driving a truck or minibus are required: GAZ Gazelle Next and GAZ Valdai Truck fall under category B by weight and number of seats. We check the driver's experience but don't require 'experience with GAZ' — manual transmission is forgiven for those who confidently drive a car. If a second person gets behind the wheel, their details are also added to the contract. A category B license gives access to all three models, including the Valdai truck — this removes the barrier for those renting commercial vehicles for the first time.
How to book a GAZ rental via WhatsApp
Booking a GAZ rental at Rent-Trip is done via WhatsApp: you write to us, we confirm the model's availability and reserve it for your dates. This takes 10-15 minutes: you name the model, dates and purpose of the trip, we check the schedule and reply. Payment is via Kaspi or Halyk transfer, with no hidden fees. If plans change, let us know at least 24 hours in advance — we'll reschedule the booking without a penalty. Via WhatsApp, it's convenient to coordinate details: delivery time, whether a driver is needed, and any specific requirements for cargo or route — everything is recorded in the correspondence. Car delivery within the city takes 30–60 minutes, the contract is signed online or upon key handover, and support is available 24/7, including weekends. Cars undergo inspection and washing before each delivery, and CASCO and OSAGO insurance are included in the price. The price is transparent, with no hidden surcharges.
GAZ rental prices: what's included in the cost
GAZ rental prices depend on the model and format: with or without a driver. Let's break down what's included in the cost and how the format affects the price.
GAZ rental cost by model
| Model | Price without driver | Price with driver | What's included |
|---|---|---|---|
| GAZ-21 Volga Retro | from 50,000 KZT/day | from 60,000 ₸/day | 200 km/day mileage, insurance |
| GAZ Gazelle Next | from 18,000 KZT/day | from 25,000 KZT/day | 200 km/day mileage, insurance |
| GAZ Valdai Truck | from 25,000 KZT/day | from 35,000 KZT/day | 200 km/day mileage, insurance |
What's included in the rental price
- 200 km/day mileage: enough for a trip to Charyn Canyon and back (about 400 km — already with extra mileage).
- Insurance: all three models are insured, CASCO is included in the price.
- Technical condition: before delivery, we check the oil, brakes, tire pressure and operation of lights.
- Winter tires: from November to March, all models are fitted with winter tires — this is critical for trips to BAO and Shymbulak.
- Child seats: provided free of charge upon request for Gazelle Next and Volga Retro.
GAZ rental with or without a driver: what to choose
With a driver, we offer all three models, but the format differs: for the retro sedan, it's usually a driver in a classic suit—part of the wedding show. For the Gazelle Next and Valdai, it's an experienced driver who knows the mountain roads and loading areas. Without a driver, you save from 7,000 to 10,000 KZT per day, but you take on responsibility for the route and parking. If you're going to Shymbulak in season, take it without a driver—there's plenty of parking there. If you're carrying fragile cargo or a wedding cortege, with a driver is more reliable.
GAZ for mountains and nature: routes from Almaty
Renting a GAZ is not just for the city: the minibus and truck confidently go to the mountains. We'll tell you which routes you can actually cover with each model.
GAZ Gazelle Next to Shymbulak and Medeu
The GAZ Gazelle Next is the optimal choice for a group of up to 13 people going to Shymbulak or Medeu: the cabin is tall, seating is comfortable, and the trunk fits skis and snowboards. The road from Almaty to Shymbulak is about 30 minutes, a serpentine with a 600-meter elevation change; the minibus handles it in second or third gear without strain. To Medeu is easier: the asphalt is smooth, but in season there are many cars—the Gazelle maneuvers better than long buses. In winter, we recommend taking a tire chain in the trunk for Shymbulak—it'll come in handy if a snowfall catches you on the climb.
GAZ Valdai Truck to BAO and Kolsai
The GAZ Valdai Truck for mountains is about construction and delivering materials: to BAO they haul sand, cement, and boards for dachas. The truck with all-wheel drive (in our configuration) confidently handles dirt roads, but on steep climbs to Kolsai it requires care—better with a driver who knows the passes. Fuel consumption in the mountains is 20-30% higher than in the city—keep that in mind when budgeting. For a trip to Lake Kolsai (about 300 km from Almaty), the Valdai is overkill if there's no cargo, but if you're carrying camping gear, it'll handle it.
GAZ-21 Volga Retro and the mountains: a retro ride
We only rent the Volga Retro to the mountains with a driver and only for short routes: to Medeu or Kok-Tobe. It's not about speed, but about a photo shoot against the mountains—the car looks striking against the backdrop of the Zailiyskiy Alatau. We don't recommend long trips in the retro sedan: the suspension and brakes aren't designed for long descents. For a wedding cortege with a mountain photo shoot, it's ideal; for transport, no.
Retro GAZ for events: weddings, filming, photo shoots
The GAZ-21 Volga Retro is the main tool for those who want to add atmosphere to an event. We'll tell you how we work with this car.
GAZ-21 Volga Retro for a wedding: how it works
We rent the Volga Retro for weddings with a driver—it's part of the image; the driver is dressed in classic style. The car is delivered to the registry office or restaurant, decorated with ribbons and rings as you wish (decor is at your expense). Inside, the interior is original style, but with modern seat belts. The standard format is 3 hours of work: delivery, photo shoot, transfer of the newlyweds. If you need a full day, we calculate at the daily rate. In our practice, retro sedans are booked for May-September 2-3 weeks in advance—during wedding season, there are almost no free dates.
Retro GAZ for filming and photo shoots
For photo shoots and video shoots, the Volga Retro is rented both without a driver (for static shoots at a location) and with a driver (for dynamic shots on the move). The car is from the 1960s; we keep it in running condition, but for shoots it's more of an art object than transport. It's often taken for music video shoots, local brand ads, and themed photo shoots in 'retro-Almaty' style. The price includes a clean car and a full tank; if the shoot involves off-road, let us know in advance—we'll assess the risks.
GAZ for business: cargo and passenger transportation
GAZ is also a working tool for business: cargo transportation, passenger transport, delivery. Let's look at how to use the models commercially.
GAZ Valdai Truck for cargo transportation
The GAZ Valdai Truck is a solution for small and medium businesses: delivery of building materials, furniture, equipment. Payload is up to 3 tons, the body is tarpaulin with a rear tailgate for loading. We rent it both with a driver (for one-off orders) and without (for companies with their own drivers). For business, daily rental is important: you only pay for the days the truck actually works. The deposit depends on the vehicle class and is returned within 1-3 business days after returning the car without damage or fines. The Valdai is in demand among furniture stores, construction crews, and online stores—those who need a truck not every day, but as orders come in.
GAZ Gazelle Next for passenger transportation
The GAZ Gazelle Next is for passenger transportation: transfers, corporate events, excursions. Up to 13 seats, a spacious trunk—for groups of tourists or employees. We rent the minibus without a driver (for companies with drivers) and with a driver (for one-off orders). For business, daily rental is convenient: you don't pay for downtime, only for days of actual use. In the high season (May-September), the Gazelle Next is snapped up for transfers to Shymbulak and Charyn—book in advance.
GAZ operating features: climate, roads, 'Sergek'
Renting a GAZ is also about knowing local realities: climate, roads, and cameras. We share our experience.
Climate and roads: how GAZ behaves
Almaty is a city with a harsh climate: in winter down to -20°C, in summer up to +40°C. For GAZ, these are working conditions: the Volga, Gazelle, and Valdai are all designed for temperature fluctuations. In winter, all models have winter tires; for the Volga Retro, special retro tires with a high profile. Roads in the city are average quality: potholes on the outskirts, good asphalt in the center. The GAZ suspension is stiff, designed for our realities, so shaking is normal, not a breakdown. In summer traffic jams, watch the engine temperature—the Volga Retro has no air conditioning; at +40°C, it's hot in the cabin.
Sergek cameras and fines
Almaty has a 'Sergek' camera system: it records speed, lane violations, and unbelted drivers. All GAZ models have Kazakhstani plates; fines go to the owner, i.e., Rent-Trip. If a fine comes during your rental, we forward the photo and receipt via WhatsApp, and you pay within 3 days. If you don't pay, the fine will carry over to the next rental. To avoid paying, follow the speed limit: 60 km/h in the city, 80 km/h on avenues. 'Sergek' works around the clock, including at night.
Fuel and gas stations
All GAZ models run on AI-92 gasoline; gas stations in Almaty are everywhere: Helios, Sinooil, KazMunayGas. We give you the car with a full tank; you return it full—that's the standard. If you fill up with low-quality fuel at a remote station, the car may start to misfire; in that case, call us, we'll replace the filters or top up. Consumption: Volga Retro—12-15 L/100 km, Gazelle Next—10-12 L/100 km, Valdai Truck—15-18 L/100 km. For 200 km of driving, budget from 2,000 to 3,500 KZT for fuel.
Conclusion
Renting a GAZ is three different cars for three different tasks: a retro sedan for atmosphere, a minibus for passengers and universal transport, and a truck for heavy loads. All are manual, with daily payment and no hidden fees. Choose the model based on your scenario, not price, and clarify details via WhatsApp—that way you'll get a car that definitely solves your problem.
