SUV rental in Almaty: 50 cars for the city, mountains, and long routes
At Rent-Trip, SUV rental in Almaty starts from 24,990 KZT/day — a selection of 50 crossovers and body-on-frame SUVs with all-wheel drive and automatic transmission. We provide cars with up to 200 km per day, insurance, and 24/7 support. Delivery to the airport and around the city.
Who needs an SUV rental in Almaty and why
Almaty is a city at the foot of the mountains, where a sedan doesn't always cope. We break down who needs an SUV constantly and who needs it for a couple of days.
City, snow, and Sergek cameras: why a crossover in Almaty
In winter, Almaty gets a lot of snow, and an all-wheel-drive crossover goes where a sedan spins on an incline. Our fleet equips SUVs with all-wheel drive and winter tires, so the car confidently holds the road on icy descents and uncleaned courtyards. High ground clearance saves from deep ruts and curbs in mall parking lots. Sergek cameras record speeding across the city, but in an SUV the seating position is higher — you see signs and markings better in advance. Ground clearance and all-wheel drive are important not only for the mountains — in courtyards and on uncleaned streets they save you every day.
Outings into nature: Medeu, Shymbulak, Kolsai, Charyn
The road to Charyn Canyon and Kolsai is dirt roads and serpentines, where you need ground clearance and all-wheel drive. To Medeu and Shymbulak the asphalt is good, but after rain on the pass there may be stones and mud — a crossover passes such sections without risking hitting the underbody. To Charyn is about 200 km one way, part of the route is gravel, where a sedan collects all the dust and can get stuck on its belly. Lake Kolsai is already highlands with long climbs, where all-wheel drive helps on acceleration and descent. Rent-Trip provides cars suitable for trips to Kolsai and Charyn Canyon — with tested brakes and suspension. In summer, you can get to Shymbulak in a sedan, but an SUV gives a margin of safety in case of rain or stones on the road.
Who needs an SUV every day
Families with children, active tourists, and those who often travel outside the city are the main renters of SUVs. In our rental, such cars are taken for periods from a day to a month when you don't have your own car or it's being repaired. For parents, a crossover is convenient due to its high seating position — no need to bend down to put a child in a car seat. For tourists, an SUV gives freedom: go to Medeu in the morning, to the mountains in the afternoon, and to a restaurant in the evening, without being tied to taxi schedules. Compared to a taxi to Shymbulak and back, renting a crossover for a day is often more cost-effective and gives you freedom of movement.
How much does SUV rental cost in Almaty: prices by class

Table: models, class, and price per day
At Rent-Trip, SUV rental in Almaty starts from 24,990 KZT/day, and top models from 74,990 KZT. The difference between an economy crossover and a premium SUV is not only in price but also in comfort on long routes.

What's included in the rental price
The Rent-Trip rate includes up to 200 km per day, insurance, and basic 24/7 support. The car is provided with a full tank or with the fuel level that was at the time of transfer — this is recorded in the acceptance act. The price also includes a car wash before delivery and a basic set of documents: contract, vehicle registration, insurance policy. Child seats and an additional driver can be arranged for an extra fee, but this is agreed upon when booking via WhatsApp. Beyond the limit, there is an extra charge per kilometer, the amount is fixed in the contract, so before a long trip it's worth estimating the route.
Why the price depends on the car class
The higher the car class, the more expensive its maintenance, insurance, and depreciation — so premium SUVs cost from 33,000 KZT. Land Cruiser 200 and Tank 300 are body-on-frame vehicles with powerful engines; their maintenance and parts cost significantly more than compact crossovers. Economy class like Geely Coolray or Haval Jolion is cheaper to operate: lower fuel consumption, simpler tires and brakes. We set the price to cover the preparation of the car for each rental — diagnostics, washing, checking all systems. For a trip to Kolsai or Charyn, you don't need a Land Cruiser — an economy crossover with all-wheel drive is enough, and your budget will be preserved.
How to choose an SUV for your task
Land Cruiser and Coolray are both SUVs, but their purposes are different. We break down how to choose a car for a specific trip.
City and short trips: Coolray, Jolion, Forester
For the city and short trips to nature, Geely Coolray from 24,990 KZT or Haval Jolion from 39,990 KZT are enough. These crossovers are compact, maneuverable, with good visibility — they are easy to park in the center of Almaty on narrow streets. Subaru Forester from 44,990 KZT is an option for those who want more trunk space and proven Symmetrical AWD. Fuel consumption of these models is 8–10 liters per 100 km in the city, which noticeably saves the budget when renting for several days. Rent-Trip provides these cars with automatic transmission and all driver assistance systems. Compact crossovers are easier to park in the center of Almaty, and their fuel consumption is noticeably lower than that of frame SUVs.
Family trips and long routes: Tiguan, Monjaro, CX-9
For a family of 4–5 people with luggage, Volkswagen Tiguan from 35,990 KZT or Mazda CX-9 from 54,990 KZT are suitable. Tiguan is a balanced option: spacious interior, large trunk, and moderate consumption. Geely Monjaro from 49,990 KZT is already a premium crossover with leather interior and seat ventilation, comfortable on the highway to Charyn. Mazda CX-9 and Chevrolet Traverse from 46,990 KZT are seven-seat models where adults can really sit in the third row, not just children. Our cars have dual-zone climate control and heated seats — critical for long trips in winter. The third row in CX-9 and Traverse is useful if two children and a grandmother are traveling — in a compact crossover everyone would be cramped.
Serious off-road: Land Cruiser 200, Tank 300, Fortuner
For heavy off-road and mountain trips, Toyota Land Cruiser 200 or Tank 300 are taken — both from 79,990 KZT. Land Cruiser 200 is a proven frame classic with a resource of hundreds of thousands of kilometers, it confidently goes over rocks, mud, and fords. Tank 300 is a modern alternative with differential locks and low range, while the interior has more electronics and comfort. Toyota Fortuner from 39,990 KZT is a middle option: frame body, but more compact and economical than Land Cruiser. We provide these cars with a verified suspension and all-wheel drive that actually works, not just shines on the badge. Tank 300 is a modern alternative to Land Cruiser: it is cheaper in the same price category, but with similar off-road capability.
Rental terms: deposit, mileage, documents
Transparent terms are what distinguishes a normal rental from dubious offers. We tell you how SUV rental works at Rent-Trip.
Deposit: how much and when it is returned
The deposit depends on the car class: from 50,000 KZT for economy and comfort to 200,000 KZT for premium and unique models. It is returned within 1–3 business days after returning the car without damage or fines. The deposit is blocked on a Kaspi or Halyk card — this is standard practice for rentals in Almaty. If the car is returned in the same condition as received, we return the full amount without deductions. We also accept cash deposits, but for the return you will need to come to the office in person. For rentals of 7 days or more, the deposit can be reduced — this is agreed individually when booking.
Mileage and fuel
The rate includes up to 200 km per day; beyond the limit, there is an extra charge per kilometer, the amount is specified in the contract. For a trip to Charyn Canyon and back — that's about 400 km, so for a two-day rental the limit will be 400 km, which covers the route with a margin. If you plan a trip to Kolsai through the National Park, add another 100–150 km for detours and stops. Fuel is not our concern: you receive the car with a full tank and return it with a full tank, or pay for missing liters according to gas station receipts. Before a long trip, estimate your route in a navigator — this way you'll definitely stay within the limit without overpaying.
Documents for rental
To book, you need an ID and a driver's license of category B with at least 2 years of experience. We sign an official rental agreement that specifies all terms: mileage, deposit, liability of the parties. Insurance is included in the price — it covers basic risks, and extended coverage can be added. The car inspection before handover takes 15–20 minutes: together we examine the body, record chips and scratches in the report, check fluid levels. All documents are processed at the Rent-Trip office in 30–40 minutes, after which you receive the keys and can go.
Where to go in a rented SUV
An SUV in Almaty opens access to places that are either scary or impossible to reach in a sedan. We've gathered proven routes.
Mountains: Medeu, Shymbulak, Big Almaty Lake
Medeu and Shymbulak are accessible via an asphalt road, but with steep serpentines and an elevation difference of over 1000 meters. The road to Big Almaty Lake is already gravel, with potholes and stones in places — there, the crossover's ground clearance matters. In winter, it's better not to go to Shymbulak without all-wheel drive and winter tires: the ascent becomes icy, and a sedan may simply not get going. In summer, there are many tourists at Big Almaty Lake, and the narrow road requires careful maneuvering when passing oncoming cars. For these routes, any all-wheel-drive crossover from our fleet will work — from Subaru Forester to Geely Monjaro.
Nature: Charyn Canyon, Kolsai, Kapchagay
Charyn Canyon is 200 km of highway and 10–15 km of gravel road before the entrance, where a sedan hits all the potholes with its underbody. Lake Kolsai is already 300 km with mountain serpentines and sections of dirt road after Saty. Kapchagay is the closest option for a water getaway: 80 km along the highway, and there all-wheel drive will come in handy to drive down to the beach on sand. On these routes, we recommend cars with a ground clearance of at least 180 mm — Coolray, Tiguan, or Fortuner. Beyond the 200 km mileage limit, the surcharge per kilometer is fixed in the contract, so for Charyn or Kolsai, plan a rental of at least two days.
City routes and the airport
In Almaty itself, an SUV is needed not only for snow — high ground clearance saves you on broken roads in microdistricts and when parking near high curbs. For the airport, it's convenient to order delivery: we bring the car to the terminal and process the documents right in the parking lot in 15 minutes. For business trips around the city, a comfortable crossover like the Volkswagen Tiguan or Geely Monjaro is suitable — presentable and practical. If you need a car for a day for negotiations and meetings, take the premium class — the Mazda CX-9 or Tank 300 will make an impression.
Travel to Kyrgyzstan and long-distance routes
Almaty is the gateway to Central Asia, and an SUV opens routes beyond Kazakhstan. We explain how it works.
Conditions for traveling abroad
Travel to Kyrgyzstan in a rental car is possible but requires prior approval when booking. We process additional documents for crossing the border — this takes time, so let us know at least a day in advance. The deposit for cars going abroad increases — this is standard global practice for rentals. For a trip to Bishkek or Issyk-Kul, both crossovers and body-on-frame SUVs are suitable — the road to the border is asphalt, but surprises are possible at the pass. The mileage of up to 200 km per day also applies to international trips, but the route to Issyk-Kul is 500+ km one way.
Popular routes: Issyk-Kul, Bishkek, the pass
Issyk-Kul is the most popular route: 450 km from Almaty via the Kegen pass, part of the way is a mountain serpentine with sharp turns. Bishkek is 240 km along the highway, but there may be queues at the border, so allow 1–2 hours for that. The Kegen pass at an altitude of 2500 meters is a test for brakes and suspension, so we check them especially carefully before handover. For such trips, we recommend the Land Cruiser 200 or Tank 300 — they hold the road more confidently on long descents. If you're going to Issyk-Kul, plan a rental for 3–4 days to stay within the mileage and not rush.
How rental works: delivery, contract, return
The rental process at Rent-Trip is designed so that you spend minimal time and get a car without surprises. Step by step — here's how it works.
Booking and delivery
Booking is done via WhatsApp — you write to us, specify the model and duration, we confirm availability and fix the price. Delivery is possible to the airport, to the office, or to any point in Almaty — the delivery cost depends on the distance and is agreed in advance. At the airport, we meet you with a sign at the exit from the arrivals area, and the paperwork takes 15–20 minutes. The car is handed over clean, fueled, and with a full set of documents. If your flight is delayed, we track the status and wait without additional charge.
Contract and insurance
At handover, we sign a rental agreement that specifies all terms: duration, mileage, deposit, liability. Insurance is included in the base price — it covers damage in an accident, but the deductible depends on the car class. Extended coverage removes the deductible completely — we recommend it for long trips and trips to nature. Before signing, we inspect the car together and record all existing damage in the acceptance report. One copy of the contract stays with you, the other with us; all disputes are resolved according to the document.
Return and inspection
Returning the car also takes 15–20 minutes: we inspect the body, check the fuel level, and verify the mileage. If the car is returned in the same condition, the deposit is returned within 1–3 business days to your card. If new damage or 'Sergek' fines are found, we record this in the report and deduct the repair cost from the deposit. We understand that minor scratches on gravel roads are inevitable, and we don't nitpick every speck of dust. An honest return is when you get your deposit in full and forget about the rental until next time.
Conclusion
An SUV for rent in Almaty is not a luxury but a practical tool for the city, mountains, and long trips. The choice of model depends on the task: a compact crossover for daily errands, a family seven-seater for trips with children, a body-on-frame SUV for serious off-roading. Transparent terms — deposit from 50,000 ₸, mileage up to 200 km per day, insurance, and 24/7 support — make the rental predictable. Before booking, determine your route and the number of passengers to choose the optimal option without overpaying. A well-thought-out rental is when the car solves the problem rather than creating new ones.
