Each scenario calls for its own pairing of "ground clearance + drivetrain": for the winding roads up to Shymbulak in winter, front-wheel drive on summer tyres is a risk, so from December to February it's better to take all-wheel drive.

The drive to Medeu takes 20–30 minutes, to BAO — about an hour, the asphalt is smooth, and all-wheel drive is not needed here year-round. In summer, people go up to Shymbulak by cable car or by car along the winding road — the surface is good, but handling matters on the turns, so we recommend models with electronic assistants. In winter the situation changes: ice and snow on the winding road make front-wheel drive risky. If you plan trips to the mountains in December–February, take all-wheel drive — Volkswagen Tiguan 2021 or Geely Monjaro 2023 will handle it more confidently.
Long-distance routes: Kolsai, Charyn, trips to Kyrgyzstan
For long-distance routes — Kolsai, Charyn Canyon, trips to Kyrgyzstan — you need a car with range and comfort at speed. The road to Kolsai is about 280 km, to Charyn — 200 km, and the final sections are partly gravel. On long routes we advise calculating the mileage in advance: to Kolsai and back — about 560 km, meaning the limit for two days is already exceeded, and it's better to discuss the surcharge before departure.
Winter mountains: what to consider in December–February
In winter, the mountains around Almaty have snow, ice and temperature swings, so the requirements for the car are stricter. All-wheel drive, winter tires and clearance of at least 180 mm are the minimum for trips to Shymbulak and the gorges. Geely Monjaro 2023, Volkswagen Tiguan 2021 and Tank 300 2023 in our selection are prepared for the winter season: tires are changed before the cold sets in. That's why it's worth keeping to the speed limit even on an empty road: on the way out of the city and on mountain passes, cameras record speeding automatically. We remind you of this at handover and advise studying the route in advance. If a fine arrives after the car is returned, we recharge it to the renter under the contract — this is standard practice for all our cars.
Refuelling, roads and seasonal restrictions
On long-distance routes it's important to plan refuelling: petrol stations on the highway to Kolsai are less frequent than in the city, and in winter some passes may be closed due to snow. Payment at petrol stations is via Kaspi or Halyk, cash is also accepted, but not everywhere. Before setting off, we advise filling up to the brim in Almaty and taking a reserve for the return journey. In summer there's heat and dust on the highway, in winter — ice and fog, so we check the condition of the car and tyres especially carefully.
