It's important that the license is valid for at least 3 months from the end of the rental date — this is a standard requirement of insurance companies.

Old-Style License: Can You Rent a Car?

Yes, old-style licences (paper or plastic without a barcode) are valid for renting in Kazakhstan as long as they have not expired. At Rent-Trip we accept such licences without any problems — the main thing is that the surname and photo match your ID. However, if you are travelling to Kyrgyzstan, we recommend exchanging them for the new format in advance — questions may arise at the border.

Rental for Foreigners: What Documents Are Needed?

Foreigners can rent a car at Rent-Trip with a foreign passport with a visa (if required) and a national driver's license in Latin script or an International Driving Permit (IDP). Guests from CIS countries (Russia, Uzbekistan, Kyrgyzstan) can rent with their national licenses — no international permit is required, as Kazakhstan recognizes these countries' documents. If your license is in Arabic, Cyrillic, or hieroglyphics, we recommend obtaining an International Driving Permit before your trip — this will save time when signing the contract.

Driving Experience: How Much Do You Need to Rent a Car?

The minimum driving experience for renting from Rent-Trip is 2 years from the date of obtaining a driver's license. This is not our whim — it's stipulated in the contract with the insurance company: drivers with less than 2 years of experience are in a higher risk group, and insurance for them is more expensive. If your experience is less, we can offer a rental with an increased deposit (from 100,000 ₸) or with the 'Sober Driver' service for the first days — this is more profitable than paying a higher insurance premium.

Deposit, Security, and Payment Methods

Deposit is a standard practice in car rental. We'll tell you how much you need to pay, what the amount depends on, and when it is returned.

What Deposit Is Required for Rental?

At Rent-Trip, the deposit ranges from 50,000 to 200,000 ₸ depending on the car class. Economy and comfort — 50,000 ₸, business, SUVs, and minivans — 100,000 ₸, premium — 150,000 ₸, unique models — 200,000 ₸. The deposit is blocked on a card (Kaspi or Halyk) and is returned within 1–3 business days after returning the car without damage or fines. We return the deposit in full if the car is returned without damage or fines — we don't look for reasons to withhold it. The only exception: 'Sergek' fines arrive with a delay of up to 2 weeks, so we hold the deposit until the cameras are fully settled.

Some cars are rented with no deposit: Hyundai Accent 2021, Hyundai Accent 2023, Volkswagen Polo 2020, Hyundai Elantra 2022, Hyundai Sonata 2021, Toyota Camry 70, Hyundai Bayon 2023 and Changan X5 Plus 2025.

Another option is the 'Standard' rate with an increased daily rate (+1,000 ₸/day) and a reduced deposit: it is convenient when you don't want to freeze a large amount on your card. In any case, we state the deposit amount before signing the contract, not when handing over the keys.

Payment methods: Kaspi, Halyk, cash

• Kaspi Gold: deposit is returned instantly after car inspection — the fastest way.
• Halyk Bank: standard transfer, refund within 1–2 business days.
• Visa/Mastercard: we accept cards from any bank, no commission charged.
• Cash in tenge: we accept, but the deposit in this case is in cash against a receipt.
• Non-cash payment for legal entities: with provision of an invoice and closing documents.

Insurance and What to Do in Emergencies

• Accident damage — repair of the rented car with a deductible of 50,000 ₸.
• Theft — if the car is stolen, the renter pays 20% of the market value as assessed.

How to act in an accident with a rented car

If you have an accident — don't panic and follow the algorithm. First: turn on hazard lights, set up a warning triangle, call the police at 102. Second: take photos of the scene from all angles, record the other party's details (full name, car plate, insurance policy). Third: call Rent-Trip at the number from the contract — we'll advise where to tow the car. Fourth: do not sign any papers without consulting us — sometimes drivers admit fault under pressure when they could have disputed it. Important: if the damage is minor (scratch, chip), you can fill out a European accident report without calling the police — it's faster and doesn't affect your rental history.

Fines from 'Sergek' cameras: who pays?

Fines from 'Sergek' cameras come to the car owner — that is, Rent-Trip. We forward the receipt to the renter via WhatsApp within 24 hours of receipt. Payment must be made within 20 days — then a 50% discount applies. If the fine is not paid, we deduct the amount from the deposit. The most common violations among our clients: speeding on Abay Avenue (cameras there every 500 meters), running a red light at the Saina — Tole Bi intersection, and parking in unauthorized places in the city center.

What to do if the car breaks down on the road

If the car breaks down during the rental — call us. Rent-Trip has a 24/7 support line, we send a tow truck or call a mobile mechanic. A mechanic's visit within the city is free, within Almaty. If the breakdown is our fault (manufacturing defect, part wear), we provide a replacement car within 2–4 hours. If it's the renter's fault (wrong fuel, damaged suspension off-road) — repairs at the client's expense. Can You Drive Out of Town and to Kyrgyzstan?

A rented car means freedom of movement. We'll tell you where you can go without restrictions, and where only with permission.

Trips across Kazakhstan: no restrictions

You can drive outside the city on Rent-Trip cars without additional approvals. The rate includes up to 200 km per day; beyond the limit, there is an extra charge per kilometer, the amount of which is specified in the contract: a trip to Charyn Canyon (200 km), to Kolsai Lakes (300 km), to Turkestan (800 km), or to Astana (1,200 km) is calculated in advance. The only condition: let us know about your route when signing the contract — this is needed for insurance. Intercity trips are a common rental scenario.

Travel to Kyrgyzstan: what you need to know

Travelling to Kyrgyzstan in a rental car is possible but requires prior approval. At Rent-Trip we allow trips to Kyrgyzstan on these conditions: rental of 5 days or more, the deposit may be increased — check with the manager, and an additional agreement is signed. At the border you need: the rental contract, the vehicle registration certificate (we provide a copy) and a power of attorney to drive (we issue it free of charge). Important: the Kyrgyz “Green Card” insurance is not included in the basic policy — you need to buy it at the border (about 3,000 ₸ for 15 days). Entry is not allowed without it.

Where you cannot go with a rented car

Travel to war zones and areas without paved roads is prohibited. Specifically: you cannot travel to Tajikistan, Uzbekistan and China — this requires special permits and international insurance. Also, you cannot use the car off-road in the mountains (e.g., Asy Plateau) — it is not an SUV, and we do not insure undercarriage damage from stones.
