How economy class differs from business class in a rental

Every day I help customers choose a car on WhatsApp, and the first question is almost always the same: “Should I take something cheaper or something nicer?” The honest answer depends on three things: how many kilometres you will drive, how many people are coming with you and what the trip is for. A class is not a verdict of “good or bad” but a set of trade-offs between price, space and performance.

Economy: a practical car for every day

Our economy class has 26 models: compact sedans and hatchbacks with 1.0 to 1.6 litre engines and 78 to 123 hp. They include the Hyundai Solaris, Kia Rio, Volkswagen Polo, Toyota Yaris, Chevrolet Spark and others. These cars are easy to park in central Almaty, undemanding in city traffic and suit anyone who needs a car as a tool: getting to meetings, picking up relatives, running errands out of town.

Business: an executive sedan with power in reserve

Our business class has 38 models: the Lexus ES, Mercedes-Benz E-Class, BMW 5 Series, Audi A6, Genesis G80, Volvo S90, plus the electric Zeekr and Mercedes-Benz EQE. All of them are automatic, with 136 to 646 hp. The main difference is felt not on the spec sheet but inside: a roomy back seat, a quieter cabin on the highway, softer suspension and richer equipment. These are cars for business trips and long routes, where the price matters but so does the state you are in when you get out from behind the wheel.

Daily rates: how much economy and business class rentals cost

Below are the minimum daily rates by class as of the date this article was updated. Our manager quotes the exact amount for your dates before booking, and it is fixed in the contract together with the deposit and the mileage limit.

How much economy class costs

The most affordable option right now is the Changan Alsvin from 12,990 ₸ per day, followed by the 2016 Kia Rio from 13,000 ₸. One of the most popular sedans, the Hyundai Solaris, starts at 18,990 ₸. At the top of the class are the compact crossovers Hyundai Venue and Hyundai Bayon at 23,990 and 25,000 ₸ per day.

How much business class costs

The entry point to business class is the 2016 Lexus ES from 35,000 ₸, with the 2015 Mercedes-Benz E-Class and the 2014 BMW 5 Series from 40,000 ₸. Recent generations cost noticeably more: the current Mercedes-Benz E-Class and BMW 5 Series start at 70,000 ₸, and the newest versions reach 150,000–160,000 ₸. So an entry-level business sedan costs roughly 2.7 times as much as the most affordable economy car.

Comfort class as the happy medium

In between sits comfort class, starting at 15,990 ₸ for the Geely Emgrand. It also includes the Toyota Camry 70 from 35,000 ₸ and the Kia K5 from 40,000 ₸: spacious sedans that many customers choose instead of business class when they need a big cabin but a premium badge on the bonnet is not essential.

Fuel costs: what economy or business class costs on the road

We hand over the car with a full tank, and after that fuel on the road is your expense, so it is worth adding it to the daily rate straight away. On short city trips the difference between classes is barely noticeable, but on a highway run of several hundred kilometres it becomes a tangible part of the budget.

Engine size and fuel type

Economy cars have 1.0 to 1.6 litre engines, while business sedans usually have 2.0 to 3.5 litres. A bigger engine and more weight mean higher consumption, especially in city traffic jams. But there are exceptions that change the maths. Three economy models — the Lada Vesta, Renault Logan and Chevrolet Cobalt — run on gas, which is usually cheaper than petrol at the pump. Business class includes the Lexus ES hybrid (from 50,990 ₸) and the Hongqi H5 hybrid, and with the electric Zeekr and Mercedes-Benz EQE petrol is not a question at all — you only need to plan your charging.

How to estimate your fuel budget

The formula is simple: rated consumption per 100 km × planned distance ÷ 100 × price per litre at the pump. Official figures are usually more optimistic than real ones, so ask me about the consumption of a specific car — I will tell you from our experience with it. If the trip is short and within the city, there is little point in downgrading a class to save on fuel; if several hundred kilometres of highway lie ahead, work out the fuel in advance.

Comfort on the road: when business class is worth it

Paying extra for business class pays off when the car works for your results or your wellbeing. In my experience, these are the most common situations:

• Business meetings and transfers for partners: an executive sedan outside the office says more about a company than a business card.
• Meeting guests with suitcases at Almaty airport: a business sedan has a roomy boot and a comfortable back seat after a flight. You can order delivery to the terminal via the airport car rental page.
• A long highway drive: Charyn Canyon is about 200 km one way, and a quiet cabin with good suspension tires the driver far less.
• Four adults in the car: three people are cramped in the back of an economy sedan, while in business class it is fine.
• A celebration or an important event where the car will be in the photos.

But for solo trips around the city, short errands or days when the car spends most of its time parked, business class is money wasted. An economy car handles all of that just as well and will not worry you in a tight parking space downtown.

Deposit, mileage and insurance for economy and business class rentals

The terms work the same way for every class; only the amounts differ. Before booking, it helps to know four points:

• Deposit: 50,000 ₸ for economy and comfort, 100,000 ₸ for business. It is returned within 1–3 working days after the car is handed back with no damage and no fines.
• Mileage: up to 200 km per day in any class; beyond the limit there is a per-kilometre charge, set out in the contract.
• Insurance: comprehensive cover (KASKO) and compulsory third-party liability insurance (OGPO) are already included in the rental price.
• Driver requirements are the same for both classes: aged 21 or over with at least 2 years of driving experience.

Keep the mileage limit in mind when planning a route. A round trip to Charyn is about 400 km, so a one-day trip will exceed the daily limit; it is easier to rent the car for two days or budget for the extra kilometres in advance. All the details are on the rental terms page.

When to choose economy

• You mostly drive around the city and are behind the wheel yourself.
• You need a car for a week or longer — over a long rental the difference in the daily rate adds up to a serious sum.
• Easy parking and low consumption matter, while the car’s status does not.

When to choose business

• The trip is work-related: meetings, partners, representative duties.
• A highway and several hours at the wheel lie ahead, and you want to arrive rested.
• There are four adult passengers and luggage.

When to consider comfort class

If economy feels cramped and business feels excessive, comfort class covers most family trips and intercity routes: the cabin is roomier, the engines are more powerful, and for most models the daily rate is well below business class.

Are there automatic cars in economy class?

Yes, 21 of the 26 economy models have an automatic gearbox and the other 5 are manual. Just tell us which gearbox you need when booking.
